Fruit Picking Backpackers are being ripped off
Backpackers who are Fruit Picking are being ripped off more than any other workers while working in Australia last year as fruit pickers.
These figures came from a Fair Work Ombudsman report which reveal backpackers on working holiday Visas made over 800 requests for assistance to the Ombudsman last year, the majority from fruit pickers and packers who were working in Queensland and New South Wales.
Most farmers are the right thing, but there are some who seek to gain an advantage over backpackers by exploiting vulnerable fruit pickers, such as visa-holders.
More than $2 million in underpaid wages and entitlements were recovered for over 500 workers with the help of Fair Work last year.
The ombudsman received over 1900 requests for Fair Work to help backpackers. Most of the cases were for underpayment or no payment, this resulted in over 150 letters of caution issued to employers and over 140 fines have been handed to employers.
A report from Fair Work showed that three quarters of all working holiday visa holder complainants were aged under 30, with a large percentage being female.
Lately backpackers are finding it tough with the government threatening them with a New Tax on Backpackers which could become reality soon if the government get there way.
